Bernard Goldsmith was a German Jew elected mayor of Portland in 1969. This exhibit highlights his legacy of the purchase of 40 acres of wooded hills west of the growing city — for $32,000 — that established what came to be Washington Park. Woven into this 100+ years of history are stories of immigrants, city planning, municipal aspirations, class conflict, and civic engagement. In her pulling together of these stories curator Judy Margles asks visitors to consider: Who shapes a city’s future? Presented as an OHS contribution to the America 250 commemoration.
