Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA

Western’s newest residence hall – named after Alma Clark Glass, the school’s first Black student from 1906 – is a center for Black student life and the life of the University. Student artist Katana Sol was commissioned to develop a set of rich illustrations that invite and inspire visitors as they pass through, highlighting themes of home, history, and black identity. Bryan Potter Design collaborated extensively with the artist, MultiCultural Collaborative (community engagement) and Mahlum Architects (Portland) on concept development and print production to install a stunning series of wall murals throughout the space. Read more about the history of Glass and Sol’s creative perspective here.
